Healthy Kids

  • E.F. Starr Elementary, as part of the Grand Island Public Schools system, is a member of the Healthy Schools Program through the National Alliance for a Healthy Generation.  This program emphasizes healthy school lunches, snacks and nutrition training as well as maximizing activity levels for students throughout the school day.

One of the programs we participate in to encourage healthy eating habits it the Nebraska Fresh Fruits and Vegetables program.  This program provides a snack size portion of a different fruit of vegetable every Tuesday and Thursday.   Students get to taste many different fruits and vegetables, foods they normally wouldn't try because parents aren't familiar with them, don't like them or don't know how to prepare them.  It has become a very popular program for students and we have seen an increase in the fruits and vegetables eaten and fewer thrown away at lunch.

We are also participating in the "Fuel Up to Play 60" program sponsored by the NFL and The National Dairy Council.  This program also promotes healthy lifestyle changes but is more focused on students decision throughout the their entire day.  We welcome parent and community involvement in these school-centered programs and invite you to check out the web links below.
